Powertrain Software Department

Job Purpose

Provide system design and integration of complex automotive powertrain systems and energy storage devices. Identify product high level requirements and derive detailed system level requirements and design specifications. Identify interfaces between systems/subsystems and ensure parts are properly with each other and the vehicle. Using simulation and analytical methods, develop an understanding of the system operations and failures to aid in the subsystem and component design process. Support the validation of the implemented systems and assist in issue investigations and resolutions.

Required:

• Degree qualified or similar qualification
• Strong numeracy and literacy skills, including ability to write clear documentation
• Good logical reasoning
• 5 years of direct experience is essential with preferably some of this within the Automotive Industry
• Excellent communication skills and able to work as part of a cross-functional team
• Proven ability to work as part of a cross-functional team
• Demonstrate a good understanding of systems and software engineering development processes
• Experience in system validation using simulation tools (e.g. MIL/HIL) and test benches
• Good understanding of vehicle network architectures (CAN)

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Identify high level system requirements from a range of sources
• Understand the inherent design trade-offs and arbitrate between different system owners.
• Develop and maintain the system level design architecture over the lifecycle of each project. Identify and control all interfaces between systems.
• Derive detailed subsystem requirements to meet the customer and legal requirements.
• Support the development of design specifications for systems/subsystems to ensure that the design meets the requirements
• Using simulation and analysis, validate the system operation and failures.
• Support the validation of the implemented systems and assist in issue investigations and resolutions.
• Support the development of system engineering processes and tools within the department
• Mentor junior members of the team in UK and China

• Degree qualified in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or similar discipline
• 5 or more years experience in developing real-time embedded software for the automotive industry
• Experience of auto-coding software within the Mathworks toolchain e.g. Simulink / Stateflow / Embedded Coder
• Good understanding of model-based software development
• Good working knowledge of software development processes and workflow e.g. Agile.
• Good working knowledge of modelling guidelines e.g. MAAB
• Good working knowledge of using software change management tools e.g. Perforce, Git, Subversion

Main Duties and Responsibilities

As a Senior Embedded Software Engineer you will work within a small proactive team to develop robust complex control strategies for DCT transmissions and hybrid powertrains over the full development lifecycle:

• Work closely with members of the Controls and Integration teams to develop prototype software for initial concept evaluation
• Develop software strategies to deliver a high level of vehicle shift quality, driveability, performance, fuel economy and customer satisfaction
• Take prototype code through the software development process for use in mass production vehicles
• Support the testing of hybrid powertrains and transmissions during dyno and spin rig testing
• Identify opportunities for strategy improvement and/or optimise functionality
• Validate embedded control strategies using MIL and HIL
• Produce functional software specifications and test reports in a clear and concise manner
• Lead and take part in software design and code reviews
• Create high-quality software within demanding timescales
• Contribute to the continuing development of software process and methodology
• Mentor junior members of the team in the UK and China

Job Purpose

Changan is undergoing a major transformation to electrify the powertrains of our passenger car business. The UK R&D Centre is at the forefront of this work to develop the future generation of electrified, connected, and intelligent powertrains. We are looking for an experienced power electronics hardware engineer to join us to lead our work in this area.

Person Specification

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Electrical / Electronics Engineering
• 5+ years’ experience working on the specification and design of power electronic hardware systems
• Knowledge of power electronic devices, including silicon based IGBTs and MOSFETs through to emerging SiC / GaN based technologies: gate driver, control architecture and measurement circuits, selection/characterisation of devices for inverter
• Knowledge of PMSM and/or BLDC machines is essential.
• Knowledge of DC/DC , AC/DC ,DC/AC converters and battery charger applications would be advantageous
• Experience of developing hardware to meet IEC 61508 (or domain specific variant, e.g. ISO 26262)
• Experience of MATLAB/Simulink Power Electronics Tool chains is advantageous
• Experience of using automotive communication protocols: CAN/ CAN FD is advantageous
• Strong numeracy and literacy skills, including the ability to write clear documentation

Main Duties

• Lead the development of power electronics hardware for traction drive and power conversion systems
• Capturing and analysing requirements from different stakeholders
• Design power electronics systems: IGBT/SiC drives, power converter including transistor selection, gate drive design, power inverter design, measurements circuits, microprocessor selection and protection strategies.
• Support the development of electrical and electronics architecture for e-drive applications including HV harness and connectors schematics
• Perform analysis/simulation of electrical and thermal performance
• Design and build power electronics test and measurement equipment for internal development activity
• Developing validation tests for electrical test bench, HiL and vehicle
• Can develop concept, proving key technologies and demonstrating the system functionality
• Provide expertise for investigations and problem-solving activities
• Lead the hardware DFMEA and support functional safety analysis
• Ensure compliance with relevant EMC/EMI standards
• Managing the technical delivery of suppliers
